Indeed, its references are often more cinematic than theatrical. This is not realist theatre, but nor does it turn its back on reality. In Erwin Motors , a young woman works nights on the assembly line of a family-run car spare parts factory. The foreman Mr Talzberg remarks that her productivity is slowing down and obliges her to work on her one night off a week, and then on day, as well as night, shifts, in order to compensate for her shortfall. Since Talzberg repeatedly distracts and pesters her while she is trying to work, he is complicit in her inability to reach her targets.
Talzberg not only exploits her labour, but also sexually abuses her. But Erwin Motors is a social and political as well as a sexual tale. Adeline Picault is a mid-career author who likes to write both for the stage, and for radio, television and cinema. Far away. Mikado, a theatre director whose apartment is strewn with books, becomes infatuated with Bobbin, wife of Jim. By her own admission, the enigmatic and impenetrable Bobbin is difficult to unravel, as her name suggests.
Translated into fifteen languages, of all the authors that feature in this volume de Vos is the most produced and most internationally recognized. Typical of this kind of theatre, in this three-hander between Madeleine whose elderly mother has just been cremated, her son Simon who comes to visit her, and a neighbour Anne, a recognizable domestic setting sets the scene for preposterous events.

Another detail not to be overlooked is that Madeleine reminds Simon of how he had been madly in love with Anne when they were both at school. When Madeleine returns and enquires about the whereabouts of the urn, a panicking Anne replies that Simon has offered it to her as an engagement gift. The subsequent scenes see the pair, via quick-fire to-and-fro dialogue, increasingly entangle themselves in the imbroglio of their own design.
Contemporary playwriting in French displays a multiplicity of styles and themes, to which the plays in this anthology bear witness. One explanation for this diversity might be the array of international influences to which French theatre is exposed. France possesses arguably the most internationalist theatre scene in the world.
Since director Jacques Copeau at the beginning of the twentieth century introduced to France the practices of foreign theatre-makers like Russian director Constantin Stanislavski and English designer Edward Gordon Craig, French theatre has welcomed playwrights, directors, companies and concepts from around the world.
The same cannot be said for much UK theatre, which remains largely isolated from overseas influences.
